12. Multi-site Functionality with App Volumes

App Volumes has Administrative features that enhance administration and lower the workload of the administrator in a multi-site scenario where there might be more than one instance of App Volumes.

We will focus on the administrative function of replicating Packages and user Entitlements from one site to another.

In our lab environment we have two Horizon vSphere based PODS being supported by two App Volumes Managers, each with their own Microsoft SQL Database

Part 1: Configuring Package replication across Sites for Site 1
  1. On your ControlCenter server
    • open your Site 1 Browser
      • in the Favourites Bar
        • select the App Volumes shortcut
      • in the App Volumes Log in
        • next to Username:
          • enter administrator
        • next to Password
          • enter VMware1!
        • select Login
  1. In the App Volumes admin Console
    • select the INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • under INFRASTRUCTURE
        • select Storage Groups
      • under Storage Groups
        • select Create Storage Group
  1. In the VMware App Volumes admin console
    • Create Storage Group area
      • configure the following:
        • next to Group Name:
          • enter Tech Seals apps
        • in line with Automation:
          • next to Automatically Replicate AppStacks and Packages
            • select the checkbox
        • next to Distribution Strategy
          • from the dropdown
            • select Round-robin
        • next to Template Storage
          • select CorpLun01a
        • In the Select Storage area
          • next to vcenter-01a.techseals.co: [Region01A] CorpNFS (NFS)
            • select the checkbox
      • select Create
  1. In the Confirm Create Storage Group window
    • select Create
  1. In the Storage Groups area
    • next to Tech Seals apps
      • select the expand button
    • In the right side of the window
      • select Replicate
  1. In the Confirm Replicate window
    • select Replicate
  1. In the App Volumes manager Admin console
    • In the INFRASTRUCTURE environment
      • select the Storages tab
    • In Managed Storage Locations
      • expand CorpNFS
        • in line with CorpNFS
          • next to Existing
            • select the checkbox
        • select to Set Not Attachable
Part 2: Configuring Package replication across Sites for Site 2
  1. On your ControlCenter server
    • open your Site 2 Browser
      • in the Favourites Bar
        • select the App Volumes shortcut
      • in the App Volumes Log in
        • next to Username:
          • enter administrator
        • next to Password
          • enter Pa$$w0rd
        • select Login
  1. In the App Volumes admin Console
    • select the INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • under INFRASTRUCTURE
        • select Storage Groups
      • under Storage Groups
        • select Create Storage Group
  1. In the VMware App Volumes admin console
    • Create Storage Group area
      • configure the following:
        • next to Group Name:
          • enter Tech Seals apps
        • in line with Automation:
          • next to Automatically Import AppStacks and Packages
            • select the checkbox
        • next to Distribution Strategy
          • from the dropdown
            • select Round-robin
        • next to Template Storage
          • select CorpLun-02a
        • In the Select Storage area
          • next to vcenter-02a.techseals.co: [Region02a] CorpLun-02a (VMFS)
            • select the checkbox
          • next to vcenter-02a.techseals.co: [Region01A] CorpNFS (NFS)
            • select the checkbox
      • select Create
  1. In the Confirm Create Storage Group window
    • select Create
  1. In the Storage Groups area
    • next to Tech Seals apps
      • select the expand button
    • In the right side of the window
      • select Replicate
  1. In the Confirm Replicate window
    • select Replicate
  1. In the VMware App Volumes admin console
    • INFRASTRUCTURE > Storages area
      • expand CorpNFS
        • note the NFS Volume now has data in it
  1. In the VMware App Volumes admin console
    • INFRASTRUCTURE > Storages area
      • expand CorpLun-02a
        • note the Volume now has data in it
Part 3: Integrating App Volumes instances

To keep application data and assignments synchronized, between App Volumes instances on Site 1 and Site 2, we will establish and manage sources to target relationships

Section 1: Integrating App Volumes instances for Site 1
  1. On the App Volumes Manager for Site 1
    • INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • select Instances
    • In the App Volumes Instances area
      • select Edit
  1. In the Edit Instance window
    • next to Secure Address:
      • enter 192.168.110.91:443
        • select Save
  1. In the App Volumes Instances area
    • select Add Target
  1. In the Add App Volumes Instance Target area
    • next to Secure Address
      • enter 192.168.210.91:443
    • next to Username:
      • enter administrator
    • next to Password:
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • next to Domain:
      • Techseals
    • next to Application Package Import:
      • select the checkbox
    • next to Package Symmetry Assurance:
      • select the checkbox
    • next to Synchronize Markers:
      • select the checkbox
    • next to Synchronize Assignments:
      • select the checkbox
        • select Save
      • In the Add Target Instance window
        • select Add
      • In the Unstrusted Certificate window
        • select Accept
  1. In the App Volumes Instances window
    • next to APPVOL-02A
      • expand the + icon
  1. In the App Volumes Instances window
    • select Synchronize
      • In the Confirm Synchronize window
        • select Synchronize
Section 2: Integrating App Volumes instances for Site 2
  1. On the App Volumes Manager for Site 2
    • INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • select Instances
    • In the App Volumes Instances area
      • select Edit
  1. In the Edit Instance window
    • next to Secure Address:
      • enter 192.168.210.91:443
        • select Save
  1. In the App Volumes Instances area
    • Note you already have APPVOL-01A as a Source
  1. On the App Volumes Manager for Site 2
    • INVENTORY tab
      • select the Applications tab
        • notice that you have your Applications and Packages delivered to Site 2
